CASH Conference - Economic Security Project

BRINGING PROGRESSIVE FINANCIAL CONVERSATIONS TO THE HISTORICAL SF MINT

The Ask: This organization is the passion of Facebook Co-Founder Chris Hughes, and examines financial equality in America. Held in the San Francisco Mint—the place where gold rush miners would exchange their nuggets for dollars—the CASH Conference had one question: how do we weave our mission of economic equality through every single element of the evening?

The Answer: The Mint is in one of San Francisco’s impoverished neighborhoods, making the risk of being “tone deaf” a real one, and meant we had to bring an attuned ear to every choice made. For example, we leveraged La Cocina as the caterer, a non-profit that provides an incubator kitchen to women of color. The client made arrangements with Project Homeless Connect, a local nonprofit that helps people living on the streets, to set up a service van alongside the venue. For entertainment during the reception, we engaged with Zoo Labs, a non-profit that empowers artists by teaching them business skills, supporting them as entrepreneurs, and directing resources towards their ventures.

Stage management and Technical Direction

  • Weaving your mission throughout your event is essential. One of our favorite aspects of this event was the fact that the client wanted to incorporate La Cocina as the event caterer, a San Francisco-based incubator for low-income food entrepreneurs.

  • Location, location, location—honestly, it doesn’t get more perfect than a former U.S. Mint for the CASH Conference! Utilizing old vaults for the reception and vintage teller rooms for meal service, we stayed on the money brand.

  • Not all brand impact is on the program; sometimes it happens outside your event. The client invited Project Homeless Connect to set up a table outside the event and connect San Franciscans experiencing homelessness with the care they need to move forward.
